Detailed Breakdown
Occlusive, Humectant, Emollient
Three things a moisturizer can do, and most products do a mix. Humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid pull water into the surface. Emollients smooth the gaps between skin cells. Occlusives form a physical film that slows water escaping.
CeraVe is mostly humectant and emollient with ceramides doing structural repair. Aquaphor is almost purely occlusive. That isn’t a quality difference — it’s a different category of product, which is why comparing them on price or rating misses the point.
When Aquaphor Is the Right Answer
Skin that is damaged rather than dry: cracked, cut, wind-burned, raw after shaving, or peeling through the first weeks of a retinoid. In all those cases the barrier is physically broken and what it needs is cover while it repairs itself. A lotion applied to broken skin mostly stings and evaporates. This is also the one context where its greasiness stops being a drawback — you’re asleep.
Why You Probably Shouldn't Wear It All Over
Petrolatum is famously non-irritating and equally famously occlusive. On skin that isn’t damaged, that seal traps sebum and dead cells rather than water, and congestion follows — which is why men who try slugging on normal skin often break out and conclude they’re allergic to it. They aren’t; they used a repair tool as a daily moisturizer. Aquaphor also contains lanolin alcohol, one of the few ingredients in it that anyone genuinely reacts to.

Can you use Aquaphor on your face every day?
On a specific patch, yes. All over, usually not. Petrolatum is one of the least irritating ingredients there is, but it's heavily occlusive, and skin that isn't damaged tends to congest underneath it. Use it where it's needed — chapped lips, a raw jawline after shaving, wind-burn — and a normal moisturizer everywhere else.
What is slugging and does it work?
Slugging is sealing your face with an occlusive like Aquaphor overnight. It does work at what it claims: transepidermal water loss drops sharply under petrolatum, so skin is measurably more hydrated by morning. It doesn't repair anything — it just stops the leak. Apply it over your actual moisturizer, never on bare skin, or you're sealing in nothing.
Is Aquaphor just Vaseline?
Close but not identical. Vaseline is essentially 100% petrolatum; Aquaphor is around 41% petrolatum with panthenol, glycerin and lanolin alcohol added. Those additions make it slightly less greasy and add some humectant action. The practical difference is small — the significant one is the lanolin, which a minority of people react to and Vaseline doesn't contain.
